About BBBS of Southwest Louisiana

Big Brothers Big Sisters’ Mission is to help children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-to-one relationships with mentors that have a measurable impact on youth.

Our vision is successful mentoring relationships for all children who need and want them, contributing to brighter futures, better schools and stronger communities for all.

Our goal is to foster success in children’s outcomes through positive adult mentoring relationships which will assist in the reduction of: alcohol/drug abuse usage rates; school dropout rates; teen pregnancy rates; child abuse and neglect rates. Our services enhance the quality of life of children, families, volunteers and communities we serve through fostering one of the main development needs, friendships.

We partner with parents/guardians, volunteers and others in the community and hold ourselves accountable for each child in our program achieving:
Higher aspirations, greater confidence, and better relationships
Avoidance of risky behaviors
Educational success

Big Brothers Big Sisters of SWLA (BBBS-SWLA) matches children ages 5 through 18 with mentors in professionally supported one-to-one relationships. We have volunteer programs in the parishes of Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron, Jefferson Davis and Vernon.

The program is open to all children, both male and female, of all ethnic backgrounds and family income levels. The program focuses on the 42% of children in Louisiana living in single parent households, and the 25% of children living in poverty, since those are critical risk factors which contribute to the estimated poor outcomes of the children of Louisiana.

BBBS-SWLA has identified our “at risk” population based on our current client participation including children on our waiting list using information gathered through client interviews and input into our Agency Information Management System (AIM) data management system.

The following are several indicators of “at risk” clients:

  • 73% of children enrolled participate in free and reduced lunches
  • 83% of children enrolled are from single parent/or other living situation households
  • 14% of children enrolled have incarcerated parents
  • 6% of children enrolled are referred through our local legal system

Background Screening Requirement

In order to be a volunteer or employee with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Louisiana, an organization affiliated with the National Council of Nonprofits or one of their State Associations, each candidate is required to have a criminal background check completed prior to begining their service.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Louisiana, as a nonprofit organization, typically incurs the cost of all background checks conducted on our volunteers.

If you would like to help us dedicate more of our limited funds to supporting our mission, please consider paying for your background check via your personal credit card (speak with your Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Louisiana administrator if you have any questions).

By purchasing your background check yourself, you will help us provide additional services to those in need.

We are grateful for the support of our volunteers and appreciate your consideration of this offer.

By selecting the appropriate position classification from the list below, you will ensure that the appropriate type of background check is conducted on your behalf.
