It is once again that time of year.
The school year is coming to a close and school aged children are looking forward to their summer vacation.
For many families their children's summer vacation includes the wonderful experience of attending a summer camp.
Attending a summer camp is an exciting and rewarding experience for the youth of our country, and with so many to choose from, parents can be assured that there is one that will provide a rewarding experience for their children.
But there is also a potential dark side to the selection of a camp. One that exposes our children to negative, potentially dangerous experiences.
I am of course referring to potential
exposure to "child predators" that may work at some camps.
What can/should you as a parent do to ensure the safety of your child while at camp?
First, you should ask for and speak with camp references to make sure the camp agenda is what you desire for your child.
Second, you should verify in writing that all camp employees and volunteers have passed a comprehensive, annual criminal background check.
Third, you should review the job descriptions of each camp staff position to make sure that the responsibilities given to staff are appropriate for the age level of the staff position. For example, you wouldn't want high school aged volunteers transporting your child unsupervised.
Lastly, you should visit any camp to see firsthand that the camp is clean, safe and that all facilities meet with your expectations.
Sending our children off to summer camp is a time tested tradition in our country. It is also a great educational experience, one that builds self reliance and confidence, for our children.
With a bit of research and due diligence on the part of parents we can improve the safety and security of the camp experience.

We recommend that you verify that the camp you select implements this process so that they can
"prevent the unthinkable" from happening at their camp.
